The Bond university sports centre’s mature and motivated club (M&M) offers those over 50 years-old a way to socialise and keep active.

Sports centre manger Russell Ramsay said the program was designed for seniors to keep healthy and active, under the supervision of qualified fitness instructors.

“Some seniors come to excise as their doctor recommend that they should to maintain their health,” he said.

The program runs five days a week and each day they offer different activities such as boxing, running, pilates, balance, strength, stretch and pool.

“It is good idea to offer this program as it has a huge benefit to our community,” Russell said.

“We [have] had this program for 18 years now, after making some changes to it, the membership number rose from 12 to 48 members in the last 12 months.

“It was a great response.”

Personal trainer and senior receptionist Jan Critchley said the program offered members more than just fitness, it was a social outing for some members.

“They form a great bond outside of the sports centre,” she said.

“We get all sorts of people, from different diversities, there are housewives and professionals, and we even have an ex-editor of The Bulletin newspaper.

“It’s absolutely fabulous.”  M&M coordinator Fiona Hamwood said it was important to introduce this kind of program for over 50s to help them maintain a healthy life.

Mrs Hamwood said there were members who had been training for more than three years.

“[They] constantly are inspiring me,” she said.

M&M club member Margret Maskoo said she had been coming to the classes three to four times a week, for the last five years.

“It keeps you active,” she said.

“It’s social as well we go for coffee afterwards.”

Sports centre assistant manager Shanon Zunker said they also offered memberships to the public.

“We always offer good price point and sports facilities to members,” he said.

Mr Zunker said this semester there were over 700 public members.
