CHANGE OF NAME
By Destine Lord
THE BOND University Sports Centre has changed its name to The Bond University Institute for Sport after becoming the first university to align itself with the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS).
Sports Centre Manager Russell Ramsay said that while the partnership is beneficial for both parties, Bond is undertaking the related costs as part of expanding its services in terms of sports research and education.
“Becoming an institute for sport is more about what we're doing than the actual partnership itself,” he said.
Other than having access to the same level of service as high performance athletes, the public and student community will not be affected by the changes.
Signage changes are already complete and staff began wearing new BUIS uniforms this week.
Changes to advertising and marketing will be phased in over the next six months.
BOND TO LEAD SPORT DEVELOPMENT

THE BOND University Institute for Sport (BUIS) could see Bondies at the forefront of Australian sporting championship events.
From September, talented athletes will be given the rare opportunity to gain any university degree without sacrificing their sporting aspirations.
Sports Centre Manager Russell Ramsay said high school graduates usually have to choose between their sporting and academic strengths.
“The student athlete pathway program allows students to continue with their sports and studies, with opportunities to represent the community, Queensland and Australia at an elite sporting level,” he said.
BUIS has developed close ties with eight elite sports bodies, so that students from the program can be recruited into these associations.
“Bond will establish club teams of reputable athletes who will promote this initiative to a wider community, developing strong and successful alumni who will go into the workforce and represent Bond long after their sporting career is over,” said Mr Ramsay.
The expansion from the Sports Centre to the BUIS will include new gym equipment, sports development programs, sports research and sports education.
The BUIS provides opportunities to students' completing sports-associated degrees to gain practical experience by working alongside athletes in training.
Sports Management student James Garside said that having experience is a great advantage.
“The professional sports industry is extremely competitive so having practical experience is invaluable,” said James.
Sport programs to be implemented include swimming, beach and indoor volleyball, soccer, basketball, tennis and rugby.
