Entering their twenty third year of community bowling Robina Bowls Club is continuing to provide the friendly social environment its members love.
Deputy Chairman Ross Handler said the club’s social goal was to focus on the community comradery of bowls.
“Being one of the smaller clubs it’s a more personal club then some of the larger ones and we concentrate on looking after our members and not so much as running it as a business,” he said.
“The current [number of members] is 420 bowling members and two or three hundred social members.”
Member of the Robina Bowls Club for 14 years, Jo Hopkins said she enjoyed bowls and loved the club.
“[I enjoy] the social aspect, the challenge, the exercise and it’s fun,” she said.
“It’s also relaxing and good for you ... I think the government should encourage people to bowl, because it’s no contact and can be as competitive as you want it to be.”
Although the club has a healthy number of members Mr Handler said he would like to see more young people become involved.
”Our current age group is well over 60, getting closer to 70 and the truth is for any bowls club to exist we need to get the younger people interested in it and we need to get family groups coming here,” he said.
“Bowls has changed its faced, it used to be the old fuddy duddies game but it’s now a young people’s game... there’s nobody in the Queensland or Australian team that’s over 30 nowadays.”
