"Surfers Paddlers Paradise"

By Jorja-Lee Wallace, Bond University Journalism Student

The Surfers Paradise Outriggers Club is home to the two national champions of the women’s two person kayak (OC2), Jasmine Kelly and Bobbie McGrath.

Miss Kelly said that it was their first time racing OC2 500 meters and that it was good fun.

“The club bought a couple of two man canoes ... thought may as well have a go, and ended up winning, so it was good,” she said.

Phil Ware, who has been paddling since 1992, said outrigging was a good team sport and has made a few lifelong friends over the years.

“I wear my heart on my sleeve ... you go through highs and lows and have that bonding with the others ... we’re all pretty close knit,” he said.
“[You get] that break from usual grind of home life and work ... it’s a good outlet, good escape ... everyone needs their own time.”

Newcomer and tri-athlete Pete Van Zyl said he had been training for four weeks and The National Kayak Sprints was his first race.

“It’s something I definitely want to do longer ... I’m looking forward to getting out in the ocean,” he said.

Mr Nolan said the only thing that could be compared to paddling was shovelling sand backwards.
